— Most companies hire applicants who have an interior design certificate, but you can also opt to finish a bachelor’s degree or even proceed for master’s for more training and focus on certain fields.
— Apprenticeships in good companies or interior design firms are important before you finally embark on projects of your own. You need to be under the guidance of experienced designers, in order for you to know how to navigate the business yourself.
— You can only practice independently after you pass a written licensing exam after your apprenticeship.
— Aside from proper education or the drive, you also need to have an aesthetic sense. You should know how to manipulate colors, materials in order to create a beautiful and functional living space.
— You need to have a good knowledge about different kinds of materials, their durability and the places where you can purchase them at good prices.
— Aside from sketches on paper, you also need to know how to plan and render designs in 3D. This would now require your computer skills in order for you to manipulate these software.
— An interior design consultant must also know building safety codes, in order for them to be guided accordingly.
— Because the nature of this job requires you to work with clients and other people in our field, you should master excellent interpersonal skills. You need to know how to take into account what the clients want, while incorporating your creative input at the same time.
— An interior designer consultant should also know how to transform outdoor spaces. For instance, turning patios into relaxing spaces. You need to broaden your scope because variety can let you handle different projects and of course, you get better pay for this.
An interior designer should never stop innovating, as change is something constant with people, and in one way or another they will grow tired with what has always been there. So you must be prepared to present something new and fresh to capture their interest for your style. Although design trends follow a cycle–every time it passes this cycle, there is always something extracted and at the same time added to it. Therefore create a new style by taking only the old style as an inspiration and not the whole of it.
